Public Transportation Top
Most first timer tourists in Seoul are availing tour package going around to Nami Island, Petite France, and Garden of Morning Calm. But there are also first timers who love to do everything in Do IT YOURSELF (DIY) style like me. I want everything to be discovered at my own pace.  When I went there via public transportation, I only had a PDF Seoul Metro Subway Map, Naver Map, and unlimited WIFI which is a must. Below are the links where you can download the map, application, and rent the WIFI I used.

  • Naver Map -  This application is pretty much accurate.
Based on my experience most of the tourists stay at Hongik University and Myeong-dong Area.  Those two locations will be a starting point of my guide going to Nami Island, the favorite destination, and the rest of the attractions mentioned above.

Hongik Univ./Myeong-dong→Nami Island

There are two ways to reach Nami Island via Seoul Metro Subway and ITX (Intercity Train Express) that I know.  I experienced  riding both of them.  I rode ITX going to Nami Island while Metro Subway back to Seoul.  You need to reach first the Cheongynyangni Station where both ITX and subway to  Gapyeong Station, nearest station to Nami Island are located.

A. Hongik Univ./Hongdae Station to Cheongnyangni Station
1. Go to Hongik Univ. Station, and ride the Line 2 towards Sinchon Station direction. After 5 stops, alight at City Hall Station.
2. Transfer to Line 1 of City Hall Station towards Jonggak Station. After 8 stops, get off at Cheongnyangni Station. Follow the sign  towards the ITX-Cheongchun and subway Gyeongchun Line. Here you can either choose to take the subway or ITX.

Read more here to help you decide. Subway Gyeongchun Line and ITX-Cheongchun

B. Myeong-dong Station to Cheongnyangni Station
1. Go to Myeong-dong Station, and ride the Line 4 towards Chungmuro Station direction. After 3 stops alight at Dongdaemun Station and transfer to its Line 1. Ride the train towards Dongmyo Station.   After 4 stops, get off at Cheongnyangni Station. Follow the sign  towards the ITX-Cheongchun and subway Gyeongchun Line. Here you can either choose to take the subway or ITX.

Subway Gyeongchun Line and ITX-Cheongchun Top
Now you have reach Cheongnyangni Station, you have two options to reach Gapyeong Station via ITX-Cheongchun and Subway Gyeongchun Line.  ITX will bring you to Gapyeong Station in just 40 minutes while the subway around 1 to 1.5 hours.  The platforms of both ITX and Subway are just parallel to each other.

Via Subway
If you are not in a hurry and want to spend less, subway is for you. You'll just need to transfer to Gyeongchun Line at Cheongnyangni Station. After 17 stops, you'll reach Gapyeong Station. Top your T-Money Card upon exit.

From Hongik University Station to Gapyeong Station: Estimated KRW 2350 / PHP 101 / YEN 216/ USD 1.99

From Myeong-dong Station to Gapyeong Station: Estimated KRW 2250 / PHP 97 / YEN 207 / USD 1.9

Via ITX-Cheongchun
I highly suggest to take this on your way as this is fastest though it will cost just a few box more. I will show the estimated cost at the later part.

When you reach the entrance of Tracks 1 and 2, you will see ATM-Like machines.  Here you can buy your ticket to ITX.  It has English menu, and easy to follow. You can either pay with T-Money or cash, and cost you around KRW 4800 / PHP 206 / YEN 425 / USD 4.

Since you'll be taking ITX, there is one thing you should do. You need to off board from Metro, but not getting out of the station. If you can see there are two transit card readers on the picture.  This is where you need to TAP your T-Money card when you need to change your train from ITX to Metro or other way around.
Each reader has two tapping sides.  The left one is for boarding metro, ITX to Metro.  While the right one is getting off the metro to ITX.  We did forget to tap ours the last time we went to Gapyeong, hence we had charged in subway and ITX at the same time. Travel time is 30 to 40 minutes.

  4. I can't count how many times I've been to Nami Island, Petite France, and Garden of the Morning Calm. I think it's doable in one day. I only use public transportation hehe. I think the best season to explore Gapyeong is during autumn.
