Day 4: Half-Day Hiroshima Itinerary: From Miyajima Island to the Atomic Bomb Dome

If you're short on time but still want to experience the highlights of Hiroshima, this half-day adventure from Fukuoka to Hiroshima to Osaka is possible — and unforgettable.

🚄 Starting the Day in Hakata

The journey began early in the morning at Hakata Station in Fukuoka. With my JR Pass in hand, I boarded the Shinkansen (bullet train) bound for Hiroshima Station. The ride was smooth and fast — just under an hour — and offered scenic glimpses of rural Japan flashing past the window. Ge your JR Pass here

⛩️ First Stop: Miyajima Island and the Famous Floating Torii

After arriving at Hiroshima Station, I quickly transferred to the JR Sanyo Line and then the JR ferry to reach Miyajima Island. The island is best known for the Itsukushima Shrine and its iconic "floating" torii gate, which appears to float during high tide.

I wandered through the charming streets lined with souvenir shops and local treats (like the popular momiji manju). The peaceful atmosphere, friendly deer roaming freely, and the spiritual beauty of the shrine made the visit feel magical — even on a tight schedule.

🕊️ Next: The Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park

After exploring Miyajima, I made my way back to the city to visit one of Japan’s most solemn landmarks: the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome).

Walking through Peace Memorial Park, I felt a mix of sorrow and hope. The preserved ruins of the dome stand as a powerful symbol of the horrors of war and the importance of peace. I took time to reflect at the Children’s Peace Monument and the Flame of Peace, knowing this was more than just a tourist stop — it was a moment of connection with history.

🚅 Ending the Day in Osaka

With my heart full and my camera roll overflowing, I returned to Hiroshima Station in the afternoon and boarded the Shinkansen once again — this time heading to Osaka. The ride took about 1.5 hours, and I arrived in the city just in time for dinner.

✨ Final Thoughts

Though the trip was only half a day, it was filled with culture, history, and unforgettable scenery. From the spiritual calm of Miyajima to the emotional weight of the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima left a lasting impression.

If you're traveling through Japan on a JR Pass and want to make the most of your time, this quick but meaningful itinerary is worth adding to your bucket list.
